Memo to Theo Epstein: I may not be a “genius” GM like you, but paying $30 million for two aging, mediocre pitchers is pretty dumb. The Rays and the Reds can pay their entire pitching staffs with what you dole out to your guys in meal money…and get results! I don’t care how “advanced” the game gets with “moneyball” and sabermetrics. There is one central truth to winning: develop your own talent, especially pitchers. It’s a heckuva lot easier to go out in the off season and rent a bat than it is to find a consistent, quality arm.
So congrats on bringing two titles to Beantown! If you keep spending on crap like Lackey and Dice-K, neglecting your farm system, and trading Bronson Arroyos for Wily Mo Penas, it’ll be another 80 years before the Red Sox win a World Series.
